MAP angler Jamie Hughes has scooped his second Fish ‘O’ Mania title in a close-fought battle in the 16-angler final this weekend.
The full-time angling coach regained the crown that he first won in 2013 with a weight of 16.600kg, claiming the £30,000 winner’s cheque and trophy in the televised final at Staffordshire venue, Cudmore Fisheries.
Utilising both pole and feeder tactics, the Wirral-based angler drew fancied peg 4 and despite recent re-stocking and bright conditions that were thought to make fishing difficult, he rotated a series of lines to maximize return from a peg that was one of the favourites before the draw.
The run-up to the event saw discussion about how recent additions to the lake’s stocks would see the anglers fare, with most of the big carp removed and replaced with small carp under 2lb. A fish race was predicted but the general thoughts of the competitors was that the weights would be low, but with so many small fish to be caught, it would be the angler with the ability to manage their peg the best who came out victorious; 3/1 bookie’s favourite Jamie proved too much for the competition, creating a four kilo cushion between himself and his nearest rival, Manchester-based Connor Barlow on peg 2. Like Jamie, he fished a combination of pole lines and feeder to the island but his challenge wasn’t good enough to reel in the MAP and Bag’em Baits-sponsored rod.
With the crowds engrossed in the battle between these two anglers the last hour was a tense affair as both Jamie and Connor caught steadily, with the half-hourly weigh-ins keeping both anglers hunting for glory.
When the final result was announced, Jamie took the traditional ‘winner’s swim’, celebrating in style with his runner, Craig Goldstraw, overwhelmed by his victory, before celebrating with his partner Emma, his family and close friends. He is only the second angler to have won the event twice.
“I’m thrilled by the win – I can’t even describe how much it means to me,” said Jamie. “To come out on top again is something I’ve dreamed about since my first win. The fishing was a lot harder than we thought it would be and with a few bigger carp still present, there was always the chance that Connor could wipe my lead out in just a couple of casts. I'd like to thank my sponsors MAP and Bag’em Baits, without them having faith in me I would never be where I am now!”
With the title in the bag, Jamie is not resting on his laurels – qualifiers for Match This beckon over coming weeks, alongside UK Champs appearances and a place in the final of the BW Stillwater Championship.
A full interview with Jamie about his famous match win will be posted on www.mapfishing.co.uk soon.
